Criticism of Australia

Randy's criticism of Australia centers on compulsory voting. In his 162-second video "One Thing That I Hate About Australia," he explained:

They force people to vote. Now, at the same time I don't think it's right to force people to vote because that's stripping people of a freedom. In Canada and England they make you register to vote but they don't make you vote. And here in America they don't make you register or vote. But I do think it's important to vote.

Randy traces his own voting convictions to a high school civics book: "It said, you see a lot of senior citizens sitting around complaining about how the government is run, and it's their fault because they won't vote. And that hit me like a ton of bricks." He first voted in 1996, casting his ballot for Bob Dole. He expressed surprise that Bill Clinton defeated Dole, noting Dole's service in World War II where he was paralyzed — "the doctor called Bob Dole's father and told him, 'I'm sorry, we don't look for him to live through the night.' But praise the Lord, he did survive."

Randy contrasted this with Clinton: "What did Bill Clinton do when it came time for him to serve his country in Vietnam?" His conclusion: "I do believe people should vote, but I also think they should not be forced to. I believe that's wrong. I believe people should have the freedom to either vote or not vote."
