Fisher Price PXL 2000 Camcorder

The Fisher Price PXL 2000 Camcorder is a Fisher-Price children's camcorder that Randy Johnson discussed as a personal possession from 1988. In his videos, he says he got one as an early Christmas present or bought one himself, and he returned to it years later with clear nostalgia.

What It Was

Randy describes the PXL 2000 as a cheap alternative to ordinary camcorders in the late 1980s. He says it recorded black-and-white video, used high-bias audio cassettes, and allowed only about five minutes per side of a 90-minute tape.

Randy's Experience

Randy says he received or bought the camera on October 16, 1988, and that he and his family used it because a color camcorder would have cost around $800. He also says his dad mocked the black-and-white image, but Randy defended it, later noting that he was able to connect the camera to a VCR and transfer the footage.

He also says the camera could accidentally record the beam from an infrared remote control, that his copy eventually stopped working, and that he later bought another one on eBay. Even with its flaws, he says it was worth the money and that he still had fond memories of it.

How He Viewed It

Randy's view is mostly positive: he treats the PXL 2000 as a useful, inexpensive camera for his situation, while acknowledging that its black-and-white output and short recording time were real limitations.
